In 2022, the installed capacity of household battery energy storage systems in Europe has exceeded 1420000 sets

According to the latest report from SolarPower Europe (SPE), the number of installed household battery energy storage systems in Europe in 2022 has exceeded 420000 units, with a battery capacity of over 9GWh. It is expected to grow by 300% to 32.2GWh by the end of 2026, and the number of households with optical storage systems will reach 3.9 million.

The number of installed household battery energy storage systems in Europe in 2022 has exceeded one million units, with a battery capacity of over 9GWh

On December 9th, the latest report by SolarPower Europe (SPE), titled “European Market Outlook for Residential Battery Storage 2022-2026,” showed that the installed capacity of European home battery storage systems (BESS) in 2021 was 650000 units, and by 2022, it had exceeded 1 million units.

In addition, the installation scale of local household batteries was around 3GWh in 2020, exceeded 5GWh in 2021, and has exceeded 9GWh this year. In 2021, the European household battery energy storage market more than doubled to 2.3GWh, with Germany having the largest market share, accounting for 59%. The new energy storage capacity was 1.3GWh, with an annual growth rate of 81%. Italy added 321MWh of new installed capacity in 2021, with an annual growth rate of 240%.

Looking ahead, SPE predicts that by 2022, the installed capacity of household battery energy storage systems in Europe will exceed 1420000 sets, enabling over 1 million households across the continent to use optical storage systems for power supply. By the end of 2022, it is expected that the cumulative installed capacity of household battery energy storage systems in Europe will increase to 9.3GWh. In general, it is expected that by the end of 2026, the total installed capacity of home energy storage systems will increase by over 300%, reaching 32.2 GWh, and the number of households with optical storage systems will reach 3.9 million. In an ideal scenario, the total installed capacity will further increase to 44GWh.

SolarPower Europe stated that due to the current high electricity prices, solar energy and energy storage can help reduce electricity bills, resulting in a record high annual installation of household battery energy storage systems. In 2021, the top five battery markets in Europe – Germany, Italy, Austria, the UK, and Switzerland – accounted for 88% of installed batteries in Europe, with Germany leading with a 59% share.
